Unworthy clients are a common source of severe claims against even the very best law firms. But in addition to dishonest clients who hope to exploit the firm’s services, client unworthiness manifests itself in various other forms, including clients’ insistence on lawyers’ advancement of unsupportable positions, unreasonable practice demands on lawyers, unwillingness to accept lawyers’ advice, and unfair criticism of lawyers’ performance, all of which have serious risk management implications for firms. Our experienced panelists will discuss strategies for detecting and avoiding unworthy clients up front, righting client relationships that are trending toward trouble, and extricating the firm from client relationships that cannot or should not be maintained.
