Is Your Property Assessed Higher Than It Should Be?

The deadline to appeal depends on your county, and some are closing soon.
Frank Masi, an attorney in our Real Estate group, helps Hoge Fenton clients challenge property tax assessments throughout California. Frank spent nearly seven years in the assessor’s offices of Los Angeles, Santa Clara, and San Francisco counties as an appraiser and senior appraiser. He regularly presented cases before the Assessment Appeals Board, so he knows how assessments are built and how they are challenged.
Where deadlines stand
- November 30: The regular filing period ends in counties that do not mail notices to all owners, including San Mateo, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego.
- Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Francisco: The regular filing period ended September 15. Supplemental and escape assessment appeals can still be filed within 60 days of the date on the Assessor’s notice.
- Next year: The filing window opens July 2 in every county.
Frank can help if:
- Your property may have lost value and could qualify for a review
- You have completed or are planning new construction
- You are planning an estate or trust transfer and want to understand the property tax impact
His experience is concentrated in high value single family residences, apartment buildings, office buildings, shopping centers and industrial and logistics buildings.
