In a ceremony held on Friday, November 5, 2021, Hon. Shella Deen was sworn into the Santa Clara County Superior Court Bench by Assistant Presiding Judge Beth McGowen. Judge Shella Deen was joined by judicial officers, family, friends, well-wishers, and colleagues from around the state and across the globe for this hybrid event.

Prior to joining the Bench, Hon. Shella Deen was the Chair of the Litigation practice at Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, and for over 30 years represented clients through all phases of litigation. Her practice focused on complex business and intellectual property disputes involving trade secrets, patents, trademarks, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, and unfair business practices. Before practicing at Hoge Fenton, Judge Deen practiced law in South Kensington, London, where she was a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales at Terence St. J. Millett, Solicitors from 1986 to 1989. Because of her expertise in global business disputes and fluency in several languages, Judge Deen was frequently consulted in disputes involving international companies, parties, and transactions. Deen earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Buckingham.

“Judge Shella Deen’s pathway to the Bench is as compelling as it is inspirational. As an immigrant to this country, Judge Deen’s courage, professionalism, work ethic, and dedication to the rule of law have made her an indelible part of the Santa Clara County legal community. Judge Deen’s ability to think critically about legal issues and her aptitude for resolving disputes will be a tremendous asset to our Court,” said Assistant Presiding Judge Beth McGowen. “It is my great pleasure to welcome Judge Shella Deen to the Superior Court. She will be a terrific addition to our Bench, and every citizen who appears before her will have the benefit of a fair and committed jurist.”
