Matthew Wes is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property and Privacy and Data Security groups. He assists clients in protecting their intellectual property through trademark and copyright prosecution and enforcement. Matt is also passionate about privacy and assisting companies develop policies and procedures to responsibly handle and protect personal data. He has experience counseling on a wide range of international and domestic privacy laws.
Prior to joining the firm, Matt worked in the legal departments of some of the most well-known and respected Internet companies in the world. He was a Privacy Fellow at LinkedIn, where he worked with its legal counsel to develop policies and procedures in preparation for the May 25, 2018 enforcement date of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Matt also previously worked as a post-bar Legal Fellow at Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., where he protected Wikimedia’s trademarks, and defended the fair use of copyrighted materials that are part of Wikimedia Commons’ collection of media files.
Matt also clerked at Mozilla Corporation (the non-profit organization that created and maintains the Firefox web browser), TRUSTe, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Before law school, Matt served as Deputy Press Secretary in the United States Senate for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Matt is a graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law where he received a Privacy Law Certificate. He has also received the CIPP/US certification in US privacy law. Matt further developed his skill in privacy law as a competitor in Santa Clara’s Honors Moot Court Competition. He placed first for best oral argument and best written brief on a claim related to the Fourth Amendment and the expectation of privacy that users have on social media websites. Matt earned the Witkin Award for Academic Excellence in Business Organizations. He was elected an American Bar Association Representative for Santa Clara Law from 2015-2017.
