Time 7:30 to 9:00 am

We are honored to present Russell Hancock, President & CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, to speak about The Grand Boulevard Initiative.

About The Grand Boulevard Initiative:

The Grand Boulevard Initiative (GBI) is a successful example of local agencies collaborating to meet regional challenges and implement smart growth practices. Under the GBI, 19 cities, 2 counties, regional agencies, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and community organizations have joined together to influence regional solutions based upon local values. The goal is to transform the car-centric El Camino Real (State Route 82) corridor from Daly City to San Jose into a great street – a Grand Boulevard that is walkable and livable and supported by numerous travel options.

The GBI is a significant community and regional effort that links transportation, land use, and economic development planning to address the anticipated regional growth and create sustainable communities. The GBI is led by Joint Venture, San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG), Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), and the San Mateo County Economic Development Association.

About our speaker:

Russell Hancock is President & CEO of Joint Venture, a position he has held since 2003. In this role Russell is best described variously: as a civic leader, community gatherer, institution builder, social entrepreneur, and outspoken advocate for regionalism. Since taking the helm of Joint Venture he has quadrupled the size of the organization; assembled a potent board filled with mayors, CEOs and university presidents; built strategic partnerships; recruited a highly talented staff; and launched initiatives that are delivering measurable results to the region.

Russell is also the founder of the annual State of the Valley conference, a “town hall” meeting attracting more than 1,500 leaders for a day spent in dialogue and discussion about the Valley’s opportunities.

Russell’s leadership in the Silicon Valley region builds on earlier work he led as Vice President of the Bay Area Council (1994-1999). There, he spearheaded the campaign extending BART to the San Francisco Airport. He also directed a broadly-based effort which ultimately created the Bay Area Water Transit Authority, charged with delivering a high-speed ferry system to the San Francisco Bay.
